-Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association Mission Statement

The Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association is the provincial sport organization that is responsible for the development and promotion of amateur wrestling in the province of Alberta.

We seek to provide awareness of the sport and the opportunity to participate in a safe and controlled environment to anyone interested in Alberta.
Sportsmanship, fair-play and work ethic are all key elements to our sport and are held as the most important elements in competition.

Wrestling is about discipline, sportsmanship and control. The objective is to pin your opponents to the mat without injuring them. Wrestling is a highly active sport with many health, social and self confidence benefits. Wrestling not only teaches people core physical skills, but also teaches skills that can be transferred to many other sports like football and rugby. Balance,

coordination, strength and physical fitness are some of the skills that participants can develop while practicing wrestling. Best of all, is anyone can do it. There are no physical prerequisites like size or height in wrestling. With wrestling you learn to work with your body and body type.

With wrestling there are so few barriers to participation. Unlike many other sports, everyone can participate. You do not have to cut members from a team. There are financial benefits to wrestling as well. Wrestling is possibly the least expensive sport to participate in. The only real cost is travel to and from events. Equipment costs are minimal at the junior high level (the only cost is mouth-guards) and at the high school level the only additional equipment costs may be uniforms. In addition to these benefits, smaller schools can be just as competitive as large inner-city schools because everyone competes individually. A school with just 1 wrestler can still have a provincial champion.

The Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association would be pleased to provide you, your school and the parents with more information about amateur wrestling. Please feel free to contact the Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association and its technical director, Mike Drought, at 780-463-0799. We will be happy to provide you with any information you may need in regards to wrestling in Alberta.
